In 1955, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad hired Newberry President and Librarian Stanley Pargellis and newspaperman and historian Lloyd Lewis to edit a book documenting the social and economic impact of the railroad. This resulting book named Granger Country: A Pictorial Social History of the Burlington Railroad contained historical materials and photographs taken by Esther Bubley and Russell Lee.

Three thousand negative images shot by Bubley and Lee were discovered in the Newberry Library’s unprocessed 20th century CB&Q archives about ten years ago.

This collection now available online contains a selection of these black and white photographs, showing the Illinois scenes, the railroad, its workers, the travelers and stations.

View the entire collection at the Newberry Library.

Train Conductor [App Store Link] is a fun railroad game where you play as the dispatcher and get to route the trains to their numbered tracks without crashing. The action takes places in the different cities of Australia which are depicted in gorgeous hand-painted maps.

Each level introduces unique twists such as Ghost Trains, Gold Rush Trains, Demon Trains and broken tracks. The game starts out easy but get crazier as more tracks and trains are introduced in later levels.

There is also a Night-Shift mode where the goal is to get as many “Ghost Trains” to their destinations as fast as you can. “Ghost Trains” do not crash into each other so you can concentrate to complete your routing. This is my best part of the game. In all, this is a fun game that i found playing more often than the other railroad games for iPhone/iTouch. Here are a few more screens from Train Conductor:

Here are some of the Night-Shift Screens:

This game is published by The Voxel Agents and here is their video showing the gameplay so you can get a feel for the action:

Train Conductor is available at the App Store for $1.99.

This video tutorial shows how easy it really is to create a simple route in Trainz. The latest version, the 2010 Engineer’s Edition is used for this tutorial. The ease of creating routes in Trainz is the biggest plus factor for this virtual simulator.

Take a virtual ride on the great Trans Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostok. The joint project of Google and the Russian Railways lets you take a trip on the famous route. Watch the scenery go by and follow your location on the map. During the trip, you can listen to Russian classic literature or the rumble of wheels, which is not the actual trip sounds but totally immerses you in the journey.

Gotta go. Have a train to catch!

Weathering a boxcar using airbrush and paintbrushes. Video and techniques shown are by Allen Rockwell.

Link to Part 2

Airbrushing does give the weathered models a better look. As i dont have an airbrush, i use pastels and Bragdon powders. The effects are good but not quite. The dust effect around the bottom of railroad cars can only be achieved quickly using airbrushing.
