This Saturday, I will be taking the Boston-New York Amtrak Regional. I know, I know… a railfan, a blog about railroads and i haven’t taken the train except for the MBTA commuter!
I was hoping to take the Acela but the tickets prices are higher and there are not a lot of discounts around. However, if you do plan to take the Regional, don’t ever pay the full price. Check out their hot deals or search for coupons before you book your tickets. I was able to get 25% off the ticket prices.
I do plan to take pictures/movie clips of the trip. I made sure i was aware of their photo policy just in case.
Driving to New York early in the morning seemed ok but just thinking about going trough the 93 exits in Connecticut tires me, so I plan to sit back and take in the urban scenery, capture some pictures and note which locomotive is hauling us.
I don’t want this post to sound like a marketing campaign but here are some of the impressive advertisement campaigns done for Amtrak recently:

A 120-foot miniature railway lies hidden in the Needhan Town Forest. Jim Metcalf, a retired design engineer worked on the miniature railway for over a decade. The spot in the forest, after a short hike, past a stream and a waterfall seemed to Jim an ideal place to relax with a martini, thus the name Martini Junction.

Gallery of Steel is a Flickr Group that has the most artistic and creative collections of railway photos from around the world. If you love photography, this collection will be a source of inspiration when you hang out next time around trains, with your camera.
Railway Valley puts you in charge of a railroad. You have to build and control the trains reach their destination points (stations and industries) without any problems.
Starts easy but then as more trains come, it becomes challenging…
Evan Design has created a new community site to showcase Model Builder designs. This site has design files in HO, N and various other scales available for download.
Note: I tried to open a mb4 file directly by clicking on it and could not. However, if you right-click and “Save Link As” or “Save Target As” and save it to your pc, you will be then be able to open it from Model Builder without any problems.
Their exhaustive tips page clears up any confusion you might have regarding printing and paper sizes, among others. You could also upload your own design if you would like to share your works of art. I just uploaded the HO Scale Barn i had done and received a $5 off coupon towards a future purchase. Maybe i will get the Brickyard. Hmmm…..

Andi Leemann and Jeri Peier had used tilt-shift photography technique to create this stunning video of trains in Switzerland. By the end of this clip, you would be convinced it was a exquisitely detailed model railroad layout.
A classic recording by Reginald Gardiner, who takes us on a journey through all the bad temper noises of the ‘livid beasts’ and the ‘diddly-dee, diddly-dum’ track sounds.
This recording was from the program called “Trains” which played on a British radio program called Children’s Favorites during the 1950s.
